Baccarat Glossary
Many of the terms used in baccarat are French, Spanish and Italian. Some
of the terms below have one meaning when applied to general gambling and
another meaning in the context of baccarat. Definitions listed here
apply to baccarat.
Action
The total money a player wagers during a session.
Baccarat
Italian: zero. A casino game of chance requiring little knowledge or
skill where all face cards and tens have a value of zero.
Baccara
Italian: Baccarat
Banco
Spanish: banker. The dealer or player in possession of the shoe who
deals and plays the hands. In some versions, the banker finances the
action; in other versions, the casino books the action, but the dealer
is usually called the banker.
Banker
The dealer or player in possession of the shoe who deals and plays the

Bankroll
The total amount of money the player intends to bet.
Banque
The dominant version of baccarat played in North America.
Burn Card
The card removed from the deck after each shuffle and placed in the
discard tray.
Chemin de Fer
French: the French version of baccarat.
Coup
French: round of play in Baccarat.
Croupier
French: dealer. In American baccarat, the croupier acts as the 'caller,'
and controls the flow of the game rather than dealing the cards. In mini
baccarat, the dealer does it all: deals, controls the flow, collects
losses and pays wins.
Cut
Divide the deck in two after the cards have been shuffled.
Cut Card
Solid-colored plastic card given to a player to cut the deck after the
dealer shuffles.
Deal
Distribute the cards.
Dealer
In American baccarat, two casino employees, stationed at opposite ends
of the baccarat table, are called dealers. They do not deal the cards;
instead, they collect losing bets and pay winning bets. The player
acting as banker deals the cards and is sometimes called the dealer as
well. In mini baccarat, the croupier deals the cards.
Discard Tray
A tray that holds cards that have been played or discarded.
Down Card
A card dealt face down.
Edge
A statistical advantage, usually an advantage that the house has over
the players, expressed as a percentage.
Face Card
Jack, Queen, King (all having a zero value in baccarat)
Flat Bet
The same bet, placed over and over again without variance. When a player
bets the same unit or dollar amount from hand to hand, he or she is flat
betting.
Hand
Cards dealt and played during each round.
House
The casino or gaming establishment.
House Advantage
The edge that the casino has over the players, expressed as a percentage.
Ladderman
Casino employee who supervises baccarat from a chair above the table.
Le Grande
French: natural 9.
Mini-baccarat
A version of American baccarat using a smaller table, about the size of
a blackjack table.
Natural
An 8 or a 9 that is dealt in the first two cards.
Palette
A tool used to move cards on the baccarat table.
Punto
Spanish and Italian: point. Point or player in baccarat.
Shoe
Wooden device that holds playing cards, from which the cards are dealt.
The shoe holds up to eight decks and allows the dealer to easily slide
one card out at a time.
Shuffle Up
A term used when dealers shuffle prematurely to annoy and harass card
counters.
Standoff
A tie.
Upcard
A card dealt face up.
